Title: Research Analyst (Temporary)

Responsible to: Director of Sustainability Programs

Location: Burlington, VT

ISCIENCES, L.L.C. conducts research to improve our customers' understanding of sustainable development, human security and the environment. We are also the creators of the TerraViva! family of data visualization software about Earth and its people.

Our projects include: assessing vulnerability to flooding; developing sub-national models of the onset of food crises; designing a strategic warning system for fragile nation states susceptible to conflict; identifying corporate indicators to promote socially responsible investment; assessing exposure to water shortages for multi-national corporations; developing models to predict basic optical parameters of materials; and, developing algorithms for understanding and using hyperspectral data.

Summary of Position:

This position is a temporary position to support an existing contract through March, 2010.

The Research Analyst (temporary) will be a member of a team that performs quantitative sustainability and vulnerability assessments for a variety of U.S. government and commercial clients.  These analyses tend to focus on freshwater shortages and surplus, cover large geographic areas (e.g., global or continental scale), and use data derived from satellite remote sensing, geospatial analysis, and quantitative environmental, social, political, economic indicators.

Duties:

1. Use industry standard geospatial analysis software such as ArcGIS, IMAGINE, ENVI, and/or IDRISI to run state of the art geospatial models and perform quality control/assurance on results.

2. Interpret results from statistical analyses.

3. Develop and run custom scripts and programs in programming environments such as Python, VBA, and/or Kepler.  Familiarity with Java a plus.

4. Integrate data from a variety of sources, formats, and disciplines into coherent databases.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

1. Bachelor degree in environmental science, computer science, mathematics, political science, or related discipline.  Post graduate education preferred.

2. Demonstrated interest and ability to understand and analyze sustainability and vulnerability, particularly assessments of freshwater issues.

Demonstrated interest and understanding of geospatial analysis using satellite remote sensing and geographic information systems.

Work Schedule:

40 hours per week.  Nominal schedule is 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with opportunities for flexible schedules pending approval by manager.

Security Clearances:

In the event that this position requires security clearances at a future time, continued employment will depend upon obtaining such clearances.

Compensation: 

Competitive salary based on relevant experience and training.

Full-time on-site GIS Developer/Analyst (junior-to-mid-level) for the US Marine Corps' (USMC) Reserves installation geospatial information and services (GEOFidelis) program in New Orleans, LA

 

•U.S. Secret Clearance required

Qualifications:

•4-6 yrs proven proficiency with ESRI software (ArcGIS, ArcSDE, etc.) incl data processing exp (conversions, projections, standards, metadata) •Understanding of spatial data standards such as SDSFIE & Database Design •GPS equipment use (e.g, Trimble GeoXH) and field data collection exp  •Exp w/data conversion from CAD to GIS, spatial database development and maint •Demonstrated exp in industry standard GIS software •Knowledge of web-GIS environments •Exp w/engineering activities and related GIS data maint and mgmt in a geodatabase environment •Exp w/ application of GIS in a site mgmt/facility mgmt setting •Ability to network within an organization, positive attitude, clear communication, strong client interface skills (people-person w/interpersonal skills), capable of handling challenging tasks/solve problems •Able to work remotely, self-starting, self-managing   

 

Responsibilities: 

Assist with coordination of USMC GEOFidelis (enterprise installation GIS capability) adoption, data collection and analysis, and mapping •Perform data collection and development using GPS and/or feature extraction techniques •Perform GIS data maintenance and management and associated activities for the installation •Technical consultant/advisor to the client regarding geospatial information management best practices and emerging technologies •Provide limited GIS/GPS instruction to customers •Interact with functional business process owners to assess their geospatial data/system usage needs and/or potential; help increase functional business process owner capability usage and system interaction through a basic-to-complex phased rollout
