The UNO Department of Geography offers credit toward a B.A. in Geography. Students majoring in Geography can choose an emphasis in one of three areas: General Geography, Environmental Analysis, or GIS/Remote Sensing. Requirements for General Geography Track (click to find College of Liberal Arts Graduation Check List for the Geography Track): Students electing the General Geography track must complete a minimum of 38 hours, which include the following: GEOG 1001 World Regional Geography (North America, South America, Europe, and Eurasia)
Elective courses in Geography: The remaining courses are to be chosen from any geography course numbered 2000 or above. Electives should be selected from the following: 1. One course from courses numbered 2401-2442. A minimum of 19 hours must be in courses numbered 3000 or above.
Requirements for Environmental Analysis Track (click to find College of Liberal Arts Graduation Check List for the Environmental Analysis Track):
Students enrolled in this track must complete 38 hours. In addition to the courses listed above, students must pick their electives from the following: GEOG 1001 World Regional Geography (North America, South America, Europe, and Eurasia)
Elective courses: The following courses may be taken as geography electives in the environmental track: GEOG 2158: Conservation
Please also note: Students are required to take Math 1115 and 1116, or equivalent, eight hours in biological sciences, and three hours of chemistry (which also fulfill general university requirements). . Requirements for GIS Track (click to find College of Liberal Arts Graduation Check List for the GIS Track): Students majoring in the Geographic Information Systems Track must complete a minimum of 38 hours in geography, including the following courses: GEOG 1001 World Regional Geography (North America, South America, Europe, and Eurasia)
Electives Courses: The remaining geography hours must be selected from courses at the 3000 level or above, but cannot include Geography 3850, 3895, 4991, 4992, 4993.
Specializations: In addition, students must complete the courses listed in one of the following options: Visualization Option: Two out of Geography 4815, 4825, and 4831; Fine Arts 1011 and 2900; and Computer Science 1581 and 1583. Computer Option: GEOG 4831 and either 4815 or 4825; Computer Science 1581, 1583, 2120, 2121, and either 2125 or 3601. Remote Sensing Option: GEOG 4821, and one of either 4158, 4550, or 4833; Computer Science 1581, 1583, 2120, and 2121; and Biology 2663 (Biology 1061 and 1063 are prerequisites for 2663).
Please also note: Students are required to take Math 1125 and 1126, or equivalent
An honors program is available for qualified students who wish to pursue a bachelor's degree With Honors in Geography. Requirements for graduating With Honors include: 1. A cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 in Geography, with an overall minimum GPA of 3.25. 2. Completion of a Senior Honors Thesis which requires earning 6 hours of Geography 3895. Enrollment in GEOG 3985 must be approved by the director of the University Honors Program. The honors thesis is to be orally defended by the student before a committee composed of the thesis director, another member of the geography faculty appointed by the chairman, and a representative of the honors program.
Minors in Geography
Minor in Geography: Geography 1001 or 1002, six hours selected from among geography courses at the 2000 level, and nine hours selected from among geography courses at the 3000 level or above.
